Marthalee Galeota, access and disability program manager for the Starbucks Coffee Company, is the featured speaker at a special event hosted by the Northwest Universal Design Council (NWUDC), Seattle Commission for People with disAbilities, AIA Seattle, and the Center for Architecture & Design on Thursday, February 9, 2017. The presentation on “Accessible Design Integration” will take place amidst an exhibit called “Open to All: Designing for the Full Range of Human Experience.”

Ms. Galeota is a grassroots disability community advocate who has worked in the rehabilitation and nonprofit worlds for 25 years. She made the transition to the corporate world in 2004. Currently she serves as a manager for equal opportunity initiatives in Starbucks Coffee Company’s law and corporate affairs department. Galeota leads disability initiatives and strategic planning, collaborates with and advises business units on universal design and access, manages interpreter services and designs and creates training programs on disability and access.

Marthalee is nationally certified as an American Sign Language interpreter with specialist skills in Braille and tactile interpreting. She is a member of the board of the Northwest ADA Center and Washington Governor’s Disability Employment Task Force.

She tells us she is “a total animal lover” who has hiked the mountains in Rwanda to be with the gorillas, cross country skied in Yellowstone to see moose and buffalo, and ziplined in Alaska “to fly with the eagles.”

The NWUDC event is scheduled Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 9:30–11:30 a.m. at the Center for Architecture & Design (1010 Western Avenue, Seattle). The presentation is free and open to the public.

ASL interpretation and CART captioning will be provided. For questions about accessibility or to request an accommodation, contact NWUDC coordinator Irene Stewart at info@environmentsforall.org at your earliest opportunity.
