The Art of Alzheimer’s: The Artist Within

From Friday, January 8, until Friday, February 26, 2016, a unique art exhibit takes place in Seattle City Hall. More than four dozen artworks by individuals age 60–101 who live with Alzheimer’s and dementia will be on exhibit in the lobby and Anne Focke Galleries.

To celebrate the exhibit—the first of its kind—the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, and 4Culture has planned a series of special events. The public is welcome to attend one or several to learn about the beauty and significance:

  • Opening Reception: On Friday, January 8, 2016 (4:00–6:00 p.m.), join artists and their families, tour the exhibition, and learn about art programs from care providers and experts.
  • Tour & Discussion: On Wednesday, January 13, 2016 (12 noon), come to a tour and participate in a discussion led by UW professor Marcus E. Raichle, who directs Harborview’s Memory and Brain Wellness Center.
  • Poetry Reading: On Wednesday, January 20, 2016 (12 noon), attend a poetry reading featuring Lon Cole, Esther Helfgott and Lori Kane. Together they will share their poetry and experiences with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  • Painting Class: On Thursday, January 28, 2016, attend one of two free painting classes—offered at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.—led by a trained Elderwise art professional. Space is limited. Sign up before January 25 at www.theartofalzheimers.net.
