Puzzle: Curiosity Is Great for Your Brain!
It’s September! Kids are buying their school supplies, loading up their backpacks and hopping on yellow buses. College students decorate their dorm rooms and wince as they purchase those pricey textbooks.
And their grandparents are joining them! More and more seniors today are taking part in educational pursuits. Studies show that education promotes brain health—not only when we’re young, but throughout life. The American Psychological Association published a study titled “Sending Your Grandparents to University Increases Cognitive Reserve,” which showed that taking college classes slows memory loss in older adults.

In honor of National Grandparents Day (September 10), help senior relatives check out the offerings at local colleges and universities. And that’s only a start. Senior centers, senior travel companies, libraries, retirement communities, museums and other cultural institutions all offer courses that might pique your curiosity. Some seniors are taking classes to help them transition into an “encore career.” Classes for people with memory loss and their caregivers provide meaningful mental stimulation and socialization.
