Get Ready, King County: Free Tax Help Is Back

This past January, I started my first season as a tax site manager with United Way of King County’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I knew it would be busy, and that there would be plenty to learn, but I didn’t realize just how meaningful the experience would be.
From the very first day, I was surrounded by an incredible team of volunteers. Some of them had been part of the program for more than 15 years! They welcomed me warmly, shared their knowledge generously, and made every day enjoyable. I quickly realized that the volunteers are truly the heart and soul of this campaign. Without them, none of it would be possible.
For those who aren’t familiar, United Way’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign helps people across King County file their taxes safely and for free. It’s especially helpful for low- and moderate-income households who might otherwise struggle to afford paid tax services. Each year, thousands of people get the refunds and tax credits they deserve—money that often makes a real difference in their lives.
I’ve worked in the nonprofit world for more than 20 years, and I’ve always believed in giving back to the community. But this experience reminded me just how powerful volunteering can be, not only for the people we serve, but also for those of us who volunteer. I learned so much from my fellow volunteers: not just about taxes, but about teamwork, patience, and the joy that comes from helping others.
One of my favorite parts of the season was seeing the connections that formed at the site. Volunteers shared stories, laughed together, and supported one another through even the busiest days. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Each one brings their own experience, compassion, and a genuine desire to make a difference. Their dedication inspired me daily.
If you’re looking for a way to give back, stay engaged, and meet wonderful people, I can’t recommend this volunteer experience enough. You don’t need to be a tax expert; training is provided, and there are many roles available, from greeting clients to preparing tax returns. What matters most is your willingness to help and to be part of something meaningful.
I’m already looking forward to next tax season and to seeing familiar faces—and hopefully some new ones, too!
