Puzzle: Vaccines Keep Seniors Safe

Seniors are at higher risk of serious complications and even death from diseases that can be prevented by immunization. Yet only a small percentage of people older than 65 have received all their recommended shots.

If you’re behind on your immunizations, remember that getting vaccinated not only protects you from dangerous diseases, but also protects babies who aren’t old enough to be vaccinated and vulnerable adults who cannot be vaccinated. Vaccines are covered by Medicare and most private insurances. The vaccines that are currently recommended for most older adults are:

  • Annual flu vaccine
  • Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis
  • Shingles
  • Pneumococcal pneumonia

It’s important to talk to your doctor about the vaccines that are right for you.
