Home Fair for Seattle Renters and Homeowners

The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) is hosting the Seattle Home Fair in south Seattle on Saturday, February 23, that will be jam-packed with useful information about renting in Seattle, remodeling, the City of Seattle’s permitting process, and much more. Experts on a variety of topics will answer questions and focused presentations will address several major current topics.

“We had a great turnout for the South Seattle Home Fairs in 2017 and 2018, and look forward to seeing even more people this year,” says SDCI’s Ciara Pickering, who is organizing the fair. “Learn about rental housing rules, affordable housing, landslide awareness, emergency preparedness, energy rebates, home ownership assistance, home weatherization, remodeling, and much more. These topics are especially important for older people—most of whom want to age in place.”

AARP national surveys consistently find that the vast majority of older adults want to remain in their homes and community-at-large rather than move to a retirement community. In a 2017 survey of Seattle residents aged 45 and older that AARP conducted on behalf of Age Friendly Seattle, 45.3 percent of respondents said they are likely to stay in their current residence and never move and 72.4 percent said they wanted a home that would help them live independently as they age (e.g., a home without stairs). Almost one-quarter of respondents were not sure that a home repair service for low-income and older adults exists in Seattle.

The South Seattle Home Fair will be held at the Filipino Community Center (5740 Martin Luther King Jr Way S, Seattle) on Saturday, February 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is entirely free.
